Insulation For Your Southern Oregon Home
If you haven't looked in your attic lately (or ever!) then get up there and take a look around to make sure the insulation is in good condition. Make sure there are enough air pockets to trap cold air. Old insulation can become brittle and ineffective so if your insulation is not doing the job it might be worth the time and energy to replace it.
You probably didn't know that the majority of Oregon homes built before 1980 are under-insulated. Which means heat can escape through the ceiling, past the roof and into the atmosphere. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, adding insulation to the attic is one of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to help cut heating and cooling costs. And it will make your home more comfortable. As a general rule, if you have less than 12 inches of attic insulation, you probably need more.
How To Know If You Need Insulation
Is
your home over 10 Years Old?
Is
it difficult for your air conditioner to "keep up" on a 95 degree day?
Can
you see the tops of your ceiling joists inside the attic?
Do
you have white or pink builders grade fiberglass in your attic?
Does
your roof completely frost over in the winter or does heat pass through the
attic melting it?
When your attic or crawlspace is properly ventilated, a positive air flow is
created which allows the house to breathe and helps prevent moisture build-up.
In hot weather, proper ventilation prevents the attic from becoming a hot box
and transferring unwanted heat down through the attic floor (even if the attic
is insulated) into the living area. In cold weather, proper ventilation helps
prevent moisture from condensing on the insulation, structural wood and the
underside of the roof deck.
